Malaga 1 Barcelona 4 - Messi weaves magic

Barcelona produced a stunning display of football as they brushed aside Malaga by four goals to one with Lionel Messi delivering a performance to remember.

Confidence was high for the Blaugrana coming into the game after their midweek defeat of Real Madrid and they began the game in a similar vein. This was without Xavi, Fabregas and Puyol who all started from the bench.

The visitors took the lead in the 33rd minute through none other than Lionel Messi. Messi started the move and spread the play to Adriano. Adriano's cross was met by Messi's head as he directed it superbly into the corner.

Barcelona doubled their lead immediately after the break. Thiago's low drive was saved by Caballero but Alexis Sanchez sent the ball high into the net from the rebound.

Messi got his second just three minutes later. Leo capitalised on a mistake by Malaga in midfield and drove through their defense, carving space in the box. He slotted the ball into the corner with his left foot to score what was a terrific individual effort.

Messi almost scored his third soon later after his free kick cannoned off the underside of the cross bar and out.

The Argentine talisman was not finished, though. He deservedly netted his hat-trick in the 82nd minute with yet more individual brilliance. He robbed the ball from compatriot Demichellis near the half way line and drove forward at blistering pace before bearing down on goal. Messi then tucked the ball into the far corner from a seemingly impossible angle to put Barcelona four ahead.

Malaga struck back three minutes later through Rondon who made the most of Valdes' spill, but it was Messi and Barcelona whose performance will be remembered.

Messi almost got his fourth late on but was denied. Messi has now scored 22 goals in La Liga and is the league's leading scorer, one ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
